You Say Potato, I say Clock. And a Fabulous Bridge Tour!

Fifth and sixth grade students made potato clocks. I asked Shaya and Shimshy to explain why it worked, and they told me that the acid in the potato completes the circuit and makes the clock work. What a fun experiment!

Second grade students are exploring the plant life cycle by planting bulbs. Each day they water and monitor their plants. They have planted them in rocks, rather than soil, so that they can see the root structure as they grow.

Mrs. Depew’s 3rd and 4th graders went on a walking trip to some of Portland’s bridges. The trip began at the Oregon Department of Transportation, where our guide, Nathan Hoover, talked with the students about some bridge terms, and what they would see on the trip.

We walked along the Tom McCall Waterfront Park to the steel bridge, and across the lower deck to the Eastbank Esplanade Floating Bridge. Along the way we saw the Fremont Bridge and the Broadway Bridge.

When we arrived at the Morrison Bridge we were able to visit the control tower and see how the bridge is lifted by the operator.

Then we made our way down to the pit levels where we hunted for the counter weights used to raise the bridge. Finally, we got to see the bridge being lifted from the inside! It was an amazing experience!
